Ever since Niewenhuis hiked the entire perimeter of Lake Michigan in 2009 (and wrote her popular 2011 book, A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach), people have asked her about her favorite stretches of the Lake Michigan lakeshore to hike . . . especially options less than 1,000 miles long!

Released just in time for the start of summer, Best Lake Michigan Hikes features the author’s favorite stretches of Lake Michigan shoreline for possible hikes, based on her 2009 epic walking adventure. These inspirational ideas are sure to encourage you to plan an outing to explore the wonderful and scenic natural resources of the Lake Michigan shoreline on your next vacation or weekend getaway.

Trails included here range from very short walks of just a few miles long up to more challenging hikes of 15 miles or more. Most of the route start or end at state parks, popular and off the beaten path, in Wisconsin and Michigan. Two are are outstanding urban hikes, in Milwaukee and Chicago.

Niewenhuis includes notes on local attractions, museums, and independent bookstores. An appendix lists major organizations like the Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, and Alliance for the Great Lakes working to preserve and protect Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes environment.

This year, the author is wrapping up a third 1,000-mile walk, focusing on exploring Great Lakes islands, with a book due out in 2015. She does many talks for book clubs, public libraries, and environmental groups; to contact her about speaking engagements, visit her website at
