Crispin Books of Milwaukee, Wis., is pleased to announce that Odin’s Promise has been selected as the winner of the 2014 Midwest Book Award for Children’s Fiction. The 25th Anniversary Midwest Book Awards has recognized the debut book by Wisconsin author Sandy Brehl as an outstanding middle-grade novel published in 2014 in the Midwest region. Hattie’s War, a story of a girl in Milwaukee near the end of the Civil War, has just been released. The historical novel for middle-grade readers, which touches on veterans’ issues as the returning soldiers, many needing long-term care, come home from the war, is by sisters Hilda and Emily Demuth, co-authors of Plank Road Summer and Plank Road Winter, two connected historical novels also set in southeastern Wisconsin in the mid–19th century. The Dazzling Darkness, a supernatural novel for adult readers set in Concord, Massachusetts, wins a bronze medal in Supernatural Fiction in the Readers’ Favorite Book Awards.
